What “Informed Consent” Really Means for Study Volunteers
Before joining any clinical research study in Canada, you go through informed consent — and it protects you more than most people realize.
You are entitled to know
The purpose of the study, what will happen at each visit, the possible risks and benefits, alternatives to participating, and how your information will be protected.
It never locks you in
Consent is ongoing. You can ask questions at any point, and you can withdraw at any time, for any reason, without affecting your regular medical care.
If anything in a consent form is unclear, ask. A good research team wants you to ask.
